Going into business for yourself can be tough – there are so many moving parts!
I believe the most critical part is your mindset. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that mindset is the #1 determining factor in your success or failure. You need to recognize all that you are and all that you have to offer and how to deal with the fears that will creep in and try to derail you. You are here because you want to create a better life for yourself and others around you. You have a dream, a creative passion.
But this is scary!
I still remember the day I made the first financial investment in starting my own business. Seriously, I felt like I was going to be sick or pass out. I had all this adrenaline flowing from the excitement of a new opportunity, but I was terrified! What had I done? Could I really make this work? Sound familiar?
Let’s talk about that fear…
I love the quote from Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” Whenever you don’t have the right mindset, you will fail. Fear tells you to stop, to freeze, or to quit. And obviously, if you freeze and are not working and investing in yourself, your business will not grow.
You made a decision in a leap of faith. You put yourself out there! You pushed past your fears and took a risk. But now you have doubts – you are listening to fear again.
Fear tells you “You have no value.” Or “This will not work.” Maybe you’re thinking just like me, “Oh no, I’m crazy! What have I done?”
Fear is a natural, normal response. It’s what keeps us from running headlong into danger. But in this case, what’s the danger? What are you afraid of?
Working for yourself will certainly push you out of your comfort zone. Fear of failure, fear of what others will think, fear of wasting your time or losing it all – this is very uncomfortable. Maybe even a little scary.
But you know what – this is where the magic happens! If you have the right mindset, you can conquer your fears. But this is not a one-time decision. It is a constant action of facing those fears and choosing to overcome. You’re going to face that choice over and over again. Each time, you’ll have to choose if you want to move back toward the safety of your comfort zone or toward growth.
I want to encourage you that God has incredible plans for you. He’s given you a job that may feel too big for you right now. But isn’t that His way? He doesn’t always choose those who seem capable or qualified or confident. He so often chooses the least expected. That is so we will rely on Him. So He will get the glory.
Years from now when we look back on our stories, I bet we’ll see this as so much more than a business journey. This is our time to grow and develop PERSONALLY – our hearts, our friendships, our families, our walk with the Lord. Commit to have a mindset that will move you forward in faith. And where will that mindset take you? ANYWHERE you want to go!
